The checkout belongs to the whole store, not one app

A downtown Augusta retailer sells online and in person. The owner may want a clearer reporting picture, a particular merchant account arrangement, or more fraud controls. NMI documents a Shopify app that connects the store to its gateway and supports order status, refunds, and sales reporting. Installing an app does not automatically improve costs, funding, conversion, or account stability.

What should the owner map first?

Write down the current Shopify plan, payment provider, processor agreement, refund workflow, payout timing, and point of sale used in the shop. Then ask exactly what the proposed integration supports, which payment methods customers will see, how orders and refunds reconcile, and who handles a failed checkout. Check all written terms before changing the live store.

Should you leave Shopify Payments?

That depends on the merchant’s actual needs and agreements. A separate arrangement may suit one store and complicate another. No responsible comparison can promise that one setup will prevent holds, disputes, or abandoned checkouts. NMI’s support guide says its Shopify service must be enabled or offered in the merchant account before installation.

What can you measure?

Record online order count, abandonment at payment, refund handling time, payout questions, and reconciliation work. If one hundred shoppers reach checkout and seventy complete payment, the completion rate is seventy percent. A gateway is only one possible factor in the other thirty. Test a controlled sample before attributing that gap to the payment provider.

Trust and security

Use a supported integration. Test mobile checkout, receipts, tax handling, refunds, and order status. Do not route card data through custom scripts or ordinary store forms. Review which store permissions the app requests and who can install or remove it.
