The Difference Between ‘AI That Talks’ and ‘AI That Does Work’
Here’s a mix-up we see all the time: people think all AI does the same thing. It doesn’t.
An LLM can have a conversation with you. That’s it — a conversation. It can answer, explain, write, summarize. But it can’t actually go DO anything on its own. It can’t book your appointment. It can’t update your inventory. It can’t post to your Facebook page.
That’s where an AI Agent comes in. An agent takes that same LLM brain and gives it hands — the ability to actually take real action in the world. Answer a customer’s text and log it in your system. Check your calendar and book the appointment itself. Post the update you asked for.
A simple way to remember it: an LLM talks. An agent talks AND does. When someone tells you they’ve got an AI chatbot, ask yourself — can it just answer questions, or can it actually get something done for you? That answer tells you what you’re really paying for.
