At the same time, SHRM released its own national AI legislative framework in June, built on eight pillars balancing innovation with worker safeguards — specifically warning against a “patchwork” of conflicting state and local AI rules that would confuse employers operating across multiple jurisdictions. That’s the exact tension CSRA employers are caught in the middle of right now: real pressure to adopt AI, and no clean rulebook yet for how to do it responsibly.

2. Georgia Just Committed $16.3 Billion to Power the AI Boom — and Your Electric Bill Is Part of the Deal
This is the story that got buried in a lot of coverage, and it’s the biggest dollar figure in today’s report. The Georgia Public Service Commission approved Georgia Power’s request to build 10 gigawatts of new energy capacity — the utility’s largest-ever such request — and regulators say roughly 90% of that new demand is being driven by data centers, most of them AI-related. The build-out breaks down into 3.6 GW of new natural gas generation, 3 GW of battery storage, 350 megawatts of solar plus storage, and up to 2.8 GW in outside power purchase agreements.

The direct construction cost is $16.3 billion. But Georgia PSC staff themselves estimate the real total cost to AI data center customers could run $50–$60 billion over several decades once financing interest and guaranteed utility profit are included. Newly elected commissioner Peter Hubbard compared it to building an entire home addition for “a new roommate, big tech” — and critics, including Georgia PIRG’s Abe Scarr, have warned that if projected AI data center demand doesn’t fully materialize, ordinary ratepayers could be left holding part of that bill. Separately, Georgia Power has also drawn controversy for using eminent domain to acquire land for new transmission lines — a case in Coweta County affects over 330 private properties.

3. Georgia Tech Proves the Automation Math Actually Works
On August 3, Georgia Tech announced it will lead a new Programmable Cloud Laboratory for Advanced Manufacturing and Materials, backed by $18.1 million from the National Science Foundation, part of a national network of 20 AI-enabled cloud labs. Researchers submit a question, AI agents recommend the experiment, robots physically run it in Georgia Tech’s Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility, and results come back — without the researcher needing to be a hands-on expert on every piece of lab equipment. As Georgia Tech’s Pascal Van Hentenryck put it: “When you cook, you have a recipe… you don’t need to understand exactly how the stove is working.”

Separately — and more directly relevant to any CSRA business owner — Georgia Tech’s ISyE program built a supply-chain planning tool called PROPEL with its AI4OPT institute. In real trials against historical data from Kinaxis (a global supply-chain planning company), PROPEL cut planning time by 88% while also improving solution accuracy, using AI to sift through millions of variables that would take a human planning team far longer to work through by hand.

State takeaway: Georgia’s posture is full-speed on AI infrastructure, and the state is proving out real automation math at serious scale — the same “cut the repetitive work down by most of its time” logic that applies to a local business’s own operations. 4. OpenAI Quietly Fixed a Real Annoyance in ChatGPT
Paste more than 10,000 characters into ChatGPT now, and it automatically converts that block into an attachment instead of dumping it directly into the chat box — keeping the composer cleaner and leaving the model more working memory (its “context window”) to actually reason well about what you pasted, instead of spending that memory just holding onto raw text. You can still click “Show in text field” to move it back to the old-style direct paste at any time.

This rolled out in stages rather than all at once: Plus, Pro, and Business users got it first in late March at a 5,000-character threshold; Enterprise and Education users were added by June; and as of this month it’s live for every plan, including Free and Go, with the threshold raised to 10,000 characters across the board.

5. Google DeepMind Just Had Its Biggest Leadership Shake-Up Ever
Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become Chairman of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet — a formal shift away from day-to-day management and toward long-term AGI strategy and Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s AI drug-discovery subsidiary. Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his AlphaFold protein-folding work, wrote to staff that he believes AGI is “close at hand.” Reporting from Semafor indicates this wasn’t a sudden ouster — Hassabis had reportedly been drifting away from day-to-day responsibilities for about a year, increasingly delegating them, because he got more satisfaction from being a visionary scientist than a tech executive.

6. The Industry Is Converging Hard on “Never Let an AI Agent Touch Your Real Systems Directly”
